In short

  • The claim: the compass method says that if you face a certain direction, such as north, on your compass before opening a chest, you're more likely to get the Pirate Shop token.
  • Does it work? No. There's no evidence that the way you're facing changes what a chest drops.
  • Why it spreads: a few lucky players found the token while trying it, and that's easy to mistake for proof.
  • What really helps: open more chests, play in a full squad, and play on Treasure Hours Sundays.

"Compass method Fortnite" is one of the newest Pirate token searches on Google, and Google Trends shows searches about the compass rising fast. The method promises an easy way to get the rarest reward in Treasure Hunters. Here's what it is, and why you shouldn't waste your time on it.

What is the compass method in Fortnite?

The compass method is a tip shared by players on social media. It says you should:

  1. Find a chest.
  2. Turn until the compass at the top of your screen points a certain way, such as north.
  3. Open the chest while facing that direction.

The idea is that facing the "right" way gives you a better chance of getting Pirate Shop Access, the token that lets you claim Item Shop cosmetics for free for 14 days, once in 2026 and once in 2027.

Does the compass method work?

No. Here's why.

The compass only shows direction. In Battle Royale, the compass shows which way you're facing and where unsuppressed gunshots are coming from, as the Fortnite Wiki explains. Epic has never said it affects loot, in Treasure Hunters or any other season.

Each chest is its own random roll. Whatever you do with your camera, every chest has the same tiny chance of dropping the token. The estimate going around is about 1 in 700,000 chests. Epic hasn't confirmed that number, but nobody has shown that anything you do before opening a chest changes it. As Of Zen and Computing puts it, no route or method changes the rate.

Lucky finds aren't proof. Thousands of players are trying tricks like this. When one of them gets the token, it's natural to credit the trick. But the thousands who tried it and got nothing don't post about it. That's how most Fortnite loot myths start.

Our view: the compass method is a myth. If it worked, everyone trying it would be finding tokens far more often, and that isn't happening.

What actually gives you more chances at the Pirate token?

Nothing raises the odds of a single chest, as far as anyone can show. But you can give yourself more chances:

  • Open as many chests as you can. Each chest is another roll. Busy chest areas and vaults help.
  • Play in a full squad. Reports say when one player finds the token, the whole squad gets it, so four players opening chests means four times the rolls for each of you.
  • Play on Sundays. Epic says Treasure Hours Sundays bring "boosted drops" all season. It hasn't said whether that includes the Pirate token, but it's the only boost Epic has confirmed.

How do you see how many chests you've opened?

Fortnite keeps count for you. Beebom explains that you open the Quests tab, scroll down to Treasure Hunt on the left, and your total chests opened is shown there.

That's a good way to see how long you've really been trying, whichever "method" you use.

Watch out for fake methods

No method guarantees the Pirate token, and nobody can sell you one. The token can't be traded or gifted, so any post offering tokens, codes or a "guaranteed method" for money is a scam.

What we don't know yet

  • The real odds of the Pirate token.
  • Whether Treasure Hours Sundays boost the token or only normal loot.
